End Hunger Calvert Cash Program

Here is a list of frequently asked questions to help you understand more about the Calvert Cash Program. If you have any other questions, please email us at [email protected] and someone from the End Hunger team will be in touch with you.

What is the Calvert Cash Program?

Calvert Cash is an End Hunger In Calvert County based program that provides financial wellness through free tax preparation services and financial education. The Calvert Cash program has two goals:

  1. To provide a truly FREE opportunity for low income Calvert County residents to file their 2016 tax return and receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
  2. To educate Calvert County residents on the hidden costs of commercial “free” tax services and rapid refund loans.

How is the program financed?

The Calvert Cash program is a collaborative effort between End Hunger In Calvert County and the Maryland Cash Campaign.

Do clients have to be Calvert County residents to use Calvert Cash?

No, clients can live anywhere in the United States.

Who is eligible for Calvert Cash’s free tax filing services?

All families and individuals with a combined income of $64,000 or less during 2016 are eligible to use our FREE tax preparation software. Calvert Cash recommends that clients with income from a home business consult a certified public accountant.

Do Calvert Cash participants have to be food pantry clients to benefit from this program?

Calvert Cast participants can be ANYONE who earns $64,000 or less income per year. Please let your friends, neighbors and relatives know about this FREE service.

How can food pantry clients benefit from this program?

Commercial tax preparation is an expense that many of our clients cannot afford. We know that our clients need to maximize their tax return funds to pay for car repairs, catch up on utility bills, and even purchase food and clothing for their family. Calvert Cash provides the opportunity for clients to prepare and file their taxes for FREE, either by themselves or with the help of a knowledgeable tax coach.

Calvert Cash also provides quality financial education concerning the dangers and expense of rapid refund loans. We know that many commercial tax preparation centers appear to offer free tax services. While these centers may offer free preparation services, there is still a fee to file. Individuals and families who have earned $64,000 or less and choose to file with Calvert Cash will not be charged any fees for preparation or filing.

Many times, the free tax services advertised by commercial tax preparation centers only include preparation using the 1040ez form. While simple to complete, the 1040ez form does not allow taxpayers to apply for the valuable Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). When clients use Calvert Cash to file their taxes, they are automatically screened for EITC eligibility.

How can clients receive services?

There are two options for clients to participate in the Calvert Cash program:

  1. Clients can visit endhungercalvert.org and file their taxes online from their own home. Our website allows clients to choose between the MyFreeTaxes Program (for those clients who have earned $64,000 per year or less in 2016) as well as TurboTax Intuit Program (for those clients who have earned $31,000 or less in 2016).
  2. If clients wish to have assistance completing their 2016 taxes, they can make an appointment to meet with one of our Tax Coaches to guide you through the tax preparation and filing process. Email Mary LaBorie at [email protected] or call 410-257-0293.
