The J. Patrick Collins Award was awarded to End Hunger in Calvert County Community Coordinator Ahna Miller

The Arc Southern Maryland held its annual Southern Maryland Awards Banquet Dec. 7.

The ceremony, which was attended by more than 300 people who support or are employed by The Arc Southern Maryland, recognized members of the community for their partnership and support of The Arc’s mission to create opportunities for independence and personal success for people with different abilities in inclusive communities.

The recipients were individuals or businesses whose actions have had an outstanding impact for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“We are grateful for the foundation of support within our community which has allowed us to continue the work we do for people with disabilities throughout Southern Maryland,” The Arc Southern Maryland CEO Terry Z. Long said. “The dedication shown towards creating opportunities for the people we support is unrivaled. It’s truly a gift to our organization and community as a whole.”

The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Roberta Parran from Calvert County Parks and Recreation.

Jennifer Haley-Walker, a Transition Specialist with St. Mary’s County Public Schools, was named Educator of the Year.

The Employer of the Year Award went to Crothall Services, while Charles County Health Department Coordinator of Community Services’ Christina Semego was named Professional of the Year.

The J. Patrick Collins Award was awarded to End Hunger in Calvert County Community Coordinator Ahna Miller.

Meritorious Service Awards were presented to Comcast, Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, Bonnie Elward of Southern Maryland Community Resources, and Special Olympics volunteer Kara Jordan.

Six of the 13 awards (some awards had multiple recipients) recognized individuals or businesses within the community and the remainder recognized the efforts and achievements of people that support or are employed by The Arc.

The Arc Southern Maryland Executive Assistant Jennie Parran organized the event, and the Greater Waldorf Jaycees sponsored and hosted the event.
