Paper Registration

Step 1: Download and read the Team Captain Packet. This packet includes all paper forms needed for the registration process and important deadlines you will need to build your team. Be sure to read through the Team Captains Packet entirely, even if you have been a Team Captain in the past – we have several great upgrades!

Step 2: Fill out the Team Captain Registration Form (page 2 of Team Captains Packet).

Step 3: Fill out the Paddler Registration Form (page 10) & the Paddler Waiver (page 11). Each paddler must fill out a waiver before they are able to step onto a boat.

Step 4: Bring in your $1,000 deposit for your team in order to hold your spot in the festival. This will also allow you to choose your team t-shirt color, practice night and tent location.

For Paddlers Who Are Joining Their Team:

Step 1: Download the End Hunger Dragon Boat Paddler Registration & Waiver Forms. Each paddler must fill out a waiver before they are able to step onto a boat. Once you have a complete registration form & waiver, please give it to your Team Captain by May 19, 2017.
NOTE: End Hunger will not be responsible for individual registrations & waivers that are not submitted to the Team Captain.

Volunteers are what make this event great! We appreciate your desire in volunteering to make End Hunger In Calvert County’s 6th Annual Dragon Boat Festival a success! Below is a list of volunteer opportunities you can sign up for. Choose the ones that interest you and fill out the form below. Each opportunity will have the following Time Frames listed next to it:

Early Morning (Before 9AM)

Volunteer Opportunities

Practice Week (6/6 – 6/9)

Dock Hands Team: (Late Afternoon – Evening)

Spend the day on the sand helping teams get prepped for their practice, loaded into the boats and off-loaded after the practice is over. (NOTE: Must be physically fit and able to stay on feet for extended periods of time.)
Minimum Serving Age: 18

Check-In Team: (Late Afternoon – Evening)
Greet, inform and check-in all Dragon Boat Team Captains.
Minimum Serving Age: 14 with adult

Admin Team: (Late Afternoon – Evening)
Input data from our paddlers into the spreadsheets to keep everything organized and prepare us for race day!
Minimum Serving Age: 14

Course Set-up Team: (Weekday Morning)
Do you have a small boat and some free time during your week day? If so, we’d love to have you work alongside 22 Dragons, the Dragon Boat professionals, to set up the course.
Minimum Serving Age: 18 with boaters license

Event Set-Up Team: (6/9 Late Evening)
Set-up tables, chairs, tents, signage, and much more to ensure a smooth morning on event-day.
Minimum Serving Age: 12 with adult

Dotting of the Eye Ceremony Team: (6/9 Evening, ~ 1 hour commitment)
Set-up, support and break-down the ceremony.
Minimum Serving Age: 12 with adult

Festival Day Opportunities (6/10)

Traffic Safety: (Early Morning – Morning)
Direct and park volunteers, team members, and spectators as they arrive to North Beach for the festival.
Minimum Serving Age: 14 with adult

Vendor Check-In: (Early Morning)
Greet our vendors and direct them to their designated spots to set up for the day. Also, expedite the process by offering to help unpack their stuff if needed.
Minimum Serving Age: 18

Ice Team: (Shifts Available Early Morning to Late Afternoon)
Stay cool as you sell ice to vendors throughout the day.
Minimum Serving Age: 18

Dock Hands Team: (Morning or Afternoon)
Spend the day on the sand helping teams get prepped for their race, loaded into the boats and off-load after the race is over. (NOTE: Must be physically fit and able to stay on feet for extended periods of time. Also, must volunteer with this team during at least one practice night.)
Minimum Serving Age: 18

First Aid Team: (Shifts Available Morning to Late Afternoon)
If you are a nurse, EMT, Medic or other medical professional, join this team to care for paddlers, spectators, and volunteers throughout the day.
Minimum Serving Age: 18

Team Runners: (Early Morning, Morning, or Afternoon)
Ensure all teams are informed, organized, and ready for their upcoming races. Must be able to walk A LOT and stay on feet for extended periods of time.
Minimum Serving Age: 18

Photo/Video Team: (Shifts Available Early Morning – Late Afternoon)
Capture the excitement of the day through photo and video. Must have previous photo/video experience and bring own professional-quality equipment.
Minimum Serving Age: 16

Clean-up Crew: (Late Afternoon)
Many hands make light work! Break-down the event and get North Beach cleaned up and back to pristine pre-event condition.
Minimum Serving Age: 12 with adult

The End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival is the event of the summer and you don’t have to be part of a team to participate. Throughout the day, there will be food vendors, craft vendors, and activities for kids. It is an event for everyone. So grab your family and friends and join us at the North Beach Boardwalk to cheer on the races as together we RACE to end hunger!

DOTTING OF THE EYE

Friday, June 9 @ 8:00PM

Join us Friday night at the North Beach Farmer’s Market for the Dotting of the Eye! This ceremony is an ancient tradition that awakens the dragons and officially kicks off the Dragon Boat Festival. Then Saturday morning – we RACE to end hunger!

LOCATION

North Beach Boardwalk, MD

Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged!

Along Bay Avenue, you will find the Dragon Boat Team’s tents and local food and craft vendors. There will also be live entertainment happening throughout the day, from stilt walkers to music on the beach. Teams will be competing for the Best Decorated Tent Award and Decked Out Drummer Award, so be sure to vote for your favorites at the Merchandise Tent.

The Dragon Boat Race course is 200 meters long, stretching from Chestnut Street to 3rd Street. Each race will last roughly one minute, and every team is guaranteed to race at least twice. Race times will be posted on the scoreboard by 8:30AM on Saturday, June 10.

What is Dragon Boating?

Dragon boating is today’s fastest-growing international team water sport. The End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival will feature boats of 16 paddlers and 1 drummer in a competition to paddle across the finish line with the fastest time.

What is the purpose of the End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival?

• To bring awareness to the reality of hunger in our local community.
• To feed and support hungry families by raising money for End Hunger In Calvert County.
• To have fun, grow community, and strengthen team unity.

Where is the End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival taking place?

The festival takes place at the North Beach Boardwalk.

Do you have to be a paddler to attend the festival?

No! The beauty of this event is that spectators have just as much fun as the paddlers! Come, cheer on the teams and visit the local food and craft vendors.

Is the End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival family friendly?

Yes! The End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival is an event your entire family can enjoy. We will have the End Hunger Zone filled with fun activities for the kids as well as local food vendors and craft vendors. However, the minimum age for paddlers is 16.

How can I race in a dragon boat?

You must be a part of a team and 16 years of age or older to participate on a team.

What is the role of a Team Captain and how do you become one?

Team Captains organize and recruit it’s team members and are responsible for all communication to their team. To become a Team Captain, please go to our Team Registration webpage for instructions and to complete a short online form, download the Team Captain Packet and follow the proper steps outlined within the packet. There is a required Team Member Packet available for download by you or each of your team members as well.

Is my registration tax deductible?

Yes! End Hunger In Calvert County is a 501(c)(3) organization. Our Federal Tax ID# is 80-0456174. All contributions are tax deductible to the amount permitted by law.

If the festival gets cancelled, do I get a refund?

The purpose of the Dragon Boat Festival is to raise money for End Hunger In Calvert County. In the event that the festival is cancelled, no refunds will be given.

Who should I contact with questions about my team practice and race times?

Your Team Captain will have all the information to make your experience great. If you are a Team Captain, you are responsible for all communication between festival directors and your team.

How long is the race course?

The length of the course is 200 meters and each race will last between one – two minutes depending on the speed and rhythm of the team. (This is subject to change as the course is set up at the discretion of the festival organizers and 22Dragons).

Is Dragon Boating safe?

Yes, however, with any outdoor activity, there is some risk involved. Three safety boats will be on the course during the entire End Hunger Dragon Boat Festival.

When are Team Captain Meetings?

If you are a Team Captain, you are required to attend at least one of the following Team Captain meetings:

  • Monday, May 29th, 6:00PM at Chesapeake Church in Classroom 6
  • Tuesday, May 30th, 6:00PM at Chesapeake Church in Classroom 6

What if my team has no experience in dragon boating?

No experience necessary! Each team will be provided with a qualified steers-person from 22Dragons who will give instruction and steer the boat. We encourage every team and paddler to take full advantage of the scheduled practice time.

How do we win the Dragon Boat Festival?

Each team will race at least twice and the fastest times will race a third time in the finals. The start and finish of the race will be controlled by race officials who will be using an electronic timing system along with video replay.

The timer will stop when the dragon boat’s nose or the bow of the boat breaks the plane of the finish line. All crew members must be in the boat at the end of the race or the boat will be recorded as “Did Not Finish” (DNF).

When will I find out when we race?

The race schedule will be posted the morning of the event – Saturday, June 21st. It is important to arrive by 8:30AM for the Dotting of the Eye Ceremony and to find out when your boat will be racing. Official times will be announced and results will be posted on the scoreboard.

What can I do to prepare for race day?

Follow your team leaders instructions and be on time for your teams scheduled practice.
